Siemens leak detection systems use mass balance technology. A patented thermal model computes and corrects for liquid expansion due to pipeline temperature or pressure changes. “Liquident” sonic signature identifies liquid density and viscosity for standard barrel or mass flow rate computation, and Reynolds number based flow profile compensation. Liquident display screens visibly identify arrival of interfaces at site stations eliminating the need for inconvenient and expensive densitometer readings. Non-intrusive clamp-on technology provides a number of advantages, including:
- Installation is quick and inexpensive since it is external to the pipe – there is no need to shut down operation or open pipe connections
- Since the sensors mount on the outside of the pipe, there is no possibility of leakage
- Maintenance is minimized since there are no moving parts to wear, and external transducers do not require periodic cleaning
- There is no pressure drop or energy loss
